Breast reconstruction surgery will definitely take a day for the breast surgeon to perform it since you’ll have to come in the morning, get yourself cleaned up and set for the breast reconstruction surgery. You will also be given anesthesia and once the breast surgery is over you will wake up after a few hours.
However, after the breast reconstruction surgery things do not go back to normal all of a sudden. There are certain precautionary measures that the patient has to take in order to make sure that no complications take place later. Of course, the patient has gone under the knife and has incisions on the body. Therefore, they needs to take care of a few things.
Do’s
First of all, you need to start eating healthy after your breast surgery is complete. This means that there is absolutely no restriction on your food habits, only that you must make sure that whatever you’re eating is fresh and healthy for you.
You can also drink alcohol, but make sure that you start drinking after the surgeon has asked you to stop taking your medications. Post-surgery you have to take a few painkillers just in case and once you stop taking those medications, only then you are allowed to drink alcohol.
You can easily sleep on your back, but make sure that you do not put a lot of stress on the areas where the surgeon made an incision.
You can also get back to non-active routine works. For instance, if you are working in an office and there is not a lot of weight lifting involved, you can definitely go back to working in the office.
During the first two weeks you are allowed to raise your arms only up to the shoulder level. However, later you will be allowed to move them as you want. Moreover, during this time you will only be allowed to pick up objects less than 5 lbs.
You can also get a breast massage during this time period.
Don’ts
You cannot sleep on your stomach since it’s going to affect your breasts. Moreover, you cannot do any hard exercises; jumping, running, lifting weights, etc. Besides this, you are not even allowed to look at your scars because there is a high chance you might open up the incisions in the process.
Even if you are trying to take a shower, make sure that you do not sit in a bath tub. Shower does not damage the incisions as much as tub water. Therefore, it is advised that you do not take a tub bath for at least two to three weeks.
You will also not be allowed to remove your surgical bra. You can remove it only once the surgeon asks you to do so. Moreover, you will also not be allowed to wear a push-up bra for the first four weeks.
