5 Myths about breast reconstruction surgery

Breast reconstruction surgery

With breast reconstruction surgery becoming extremely common in the world of today, there are quite a lot of myths that are being attached to it. Let’s go through these myths and see why people believe so and how they are true or false.

Breast reconstruction must take place immediately after mastectomy

This is absolutely not true. Even though many people like to get done with the breast reconstruction right after or during the mastectomy, it has been revealed that you can go through the breast reconstruction process after as many years as you want.

Need to have Breast implants

This is also not true. There are various ways through which a surgeon can recreate or reconstruct your breasts. Either you can utilize the breast implants, or you can use your own body tissues in order to rebuild the breasts. In fact, using your own body tissues is going to help with sensations and also in rebuilding of the breasts in a natural way. Implants are definitely not a must-have.

Breasts look unnatural

In the world of today, where technology is touching new heights, the breast reconstruction surgery has advanced to such a high level that the surgeon can make things work easily. Surgeons these days work very hard to perfect their techniques and now there are surgeons who easily perform a breast reconstruction surgery in a way that the final result looks absolutely natural. You can go through breast implants, tissue rebuilding processes and even symmetry procedures, where the surgeon makes sure that both breasts remain symmetrical.

Only one Breast  reconstruction surgery required

This is also not entirely true. There is always a chance that the surgeon might have to make you go through more than one surgery. For instance, there is a high chance that you have gone through mastectomy and later you have also gone through radiation and chemotherapy. Later, however, during the breast reconstruction, the surgeons might first only make incisions and perform the reconstruction. However, if the final result is not exactly what the surgeon required; he/she might make you go through another surgery for better results.

Breast cancer recurrence becomes difficult

This is also not true. Some women are of the opinion that once a breast reconstruction has taken place, it becomes difficult for the doctor to detect the recurrence of breast cancer. You simply need to ask your surgeon to explain to you about the types of tests that you will have to go through after the breast reconstruction surgery so that in case the breast cancer reappears, the doctor gets to know about it.
